WHAT YOU DO WITH THE INFORMATION

Dear Friends,

A long time ago I heard someone say that they thought democracy was best described as "the opportunity to do whatever you want with whatever you've learned". I'm not sure that's 100% true, but I've been thinking about it a lot recently. With March Break happening this last week, students are everywhere - and part of my mind wonders what they're all up to, and what their futures hold. In other words, what will they do with what they've learned?

One of the most valuable pieces of "learning" that I hold to this day is something that was gifted to me in my last year of high school. My math teacher (Finite Mathematics, for those interested) took me aside to tell me that I was destined to fail the class. It wasn't something I wanted to hear, as I had my mind long set on going to music at university and starting a career as quick as I could. Failing math would have stopped that plan dead in its tracks! My math teacher taught me not just how to succeed at the math I didn't understand, but exactly how my mind needed to be used in order to absorb new information well (thank you Mrs. Medley!). It's a technique I teach my own students now, and it works. Absolutely any time I'm confused with how to move forward with something, I have a way to tackle the issue.

In honour of Mrs. Medley (sadly no longer with us), a short video of Beethoven's music. She liked the solidity of Beethoven...

Another example I was thinking of this week was a former student of mine that studied with me at McGill years ago. She came from a small town in Saskatchewan (population less then 400 people), and took all of her learning to where she is now - living her dream life in Paris, France. She teaches string pedagogy at the world famous Paris Conservatoire, plays in a host of professional ensembles in the city, and is now married with her first child. Very happily, I get a chance to see her in action in May as we will perform together for the first time in Paris. Years ago she told me that all of her years of education ultimately led her to discover what she was able to give to others. Once she figured that out, it was all she wanted to do.

I find that quite inspiring!

So in honour of learning, and specifically what music can bring to us through learning, here's a fantastic video with the incomparable Jacob Collier (let's get him to Stratford, please!). I learned a lot from this!

In other pursuits of learning, SSM has reflected on a meaningful year celebrating our 25th season in 2025, a significant milestone made possible by the generosity and ongoing support of our community. Last season featured outstanding performances and memorable artistic moments, and despite challenges, supporters ensured that live music continued to bring people together. SSM expresses deep gratitude for the ongoing community support and invites you to explore the 2025 Annual Report to see the impact of our programming and achievements of this landmark year.

Here's to learning, curiosity, and the possibilities ahead!

Have a great weekend!
