IN MEMORIAM

Dear Friends,

The arts world in Canada was shocked last weekend at the sudden passing of Cris Derksen — cellist, composer, and all-around champion of music and how it connects to virtually all ages and strands of society. In her very short 45 years she did virtually everything possible of a musician. She performed at Carnegie Hall (under the baton of Yannick Nezet-Seguin), she wrote new works for groups such as the Toronto Symphony (premiered a matter of weeks ago) and performed for us at Stratford Summer Music back in 2019. Her performance in Market Square left a mark on many, most particularly the younger generation in attendance. I have never had so many messages reach my in-box from under 20s as I did after Cris's performance that day.

While I didn't know Cris well, I did have enough contact with her to know that she carried within a trait that I admire most about many artists - knowing when she could help any given situation. It wasn't about Cris, it was about service.

Here's an article that sheds more light on the accident that took her life, and her path in the music world.

Rest well, Cris. You were taken far too soon.
