From the Executive Director’s Chair: Crystal’s Must-See Moments at SSM
Hello Stratford Summer Music Fans,
Mark is away this week, so I’m taking over the email!
Most of you probably don’t know that I come from a musical background. I studied music extensively through school and the Canadian Cadet program. What I’ve always loved most about music is its power to bring people together.
Some of my longest and dearest friendships were formed with fellow musicians I met while training across the country. We only saw each other a few times a year, but those sessions were intense—full of music, learning, and the journey into adulthood.
Recently, I had the privilege of sitting on a jury alongside peers from those days. We’ve all grown up, scattered across North America, and are now awarding scholarships to the next generation of music cadets pursuing post-secondary education. Seeing those familiar faces brought back such joy—and reminded me of the sense of accomplishment and connection music has always given me.
So, for this week’s email, I’ve gone through our summer programming and included some personal highlights, along with links to get your tickets. Mark and I would love for you to join us in celebrating the joy of music during this special 25th Anniversary season.
My first pick of the summer? Opening Night: Carmina Burana.
Picture this: two grand pianos, three vocalists, four percussionists, and a 30-voice choir filling The Avondale stage with raw, powerful sound. The moment it begins, you’ll know why this piece is so iconic. Not only is Carmina Burana a classical masterpiece—it’s also famously featured in films like The Bachelor (1999), Jackass: The Movie (2002), Cheaper by the Dozen (2003), and many more.

Week One Pick: Adi Braun Sings Cole Porter
Remember those classic black-and-white films? The scene opens: a smoky nightclub, a handsome actor—maybe Paul Newman or James Dean—walks in, cigarette in hand, fedora tilted just so. Then he sees her: the stunning woman on stage with a voice that stops time. Bam—he’s starstruck.
That’s the magic you can expect from Adi Braun Sings Cole Porter. It's an evening of elegance, nostalgia, and timeless music.

Week Two Pick: Schmaltz & Pepper
Growing up in Winnipeg, I was lucky to be surrounded by a vibrant Jewish community. The local deli wasn’t just a place to eat—it was a gathering spot where you could enjoy a steaming bowl of matzo ball soup and hear the joyful sounds of traditional music filling the air.
Now imagine capturing that same warm, communal spirit and mixing it with klezmer, jazz, and classical influences—served up outdoors under the summer sky. That’s exactly what Schmaltz & Pepper brings to the stage. Their vibrant performance is full of smiles, laughter, and the kind of infectious energy that will have us all on our feet.
Don’t miss this evening of classy klezmer and pure joy.

Week Three Pick: John Novacek’s Rhapsody in Blue
This week’s pick goes to Rhapsody in Blue, performed by the incredible John Novacek.
I’ll admit—I’ve never experienced this piece live before. But Mark assures me it will be one of the most unforgettable musical experiences of the season. And I believe him.
I’m a HUGE Gene Kelly fan. I can still picture myself as a kid, lying on my Gram’s living room floor, completely captivated by his movies. While Rhapsody in Blue is the title of its own film, many of the musical themes you’ll hear will instantly transport you to the sweeping romance and charm of An American in Paris.

Week Four Pick: Michael Kaeshammer
Okay… whew, we’ve made it to week four! This one was tough—there’s just so much to choose from—but my pick has to be Michael Kaeshammer.
Not only is he absolutely fantastic to listen to, but I keep hearing (and yes, you know who you are!) how easy he is on the eyes too!
You’re probably used to hearing our classical performances at The Avondale… well, this one’s going to feel a little different. It’s time to loosen those laces and prepare to boogie—because when Michael hits the stage, sitting still won’t be an option.
